Zavada undergoes elbow surgery

Category: Nick P's blog — Nick Piecoro - NickPiecoro's Blog - azcentral.com @ 7:36 pm
Left-hander Clay Zavada underwent Tommy John surgery on his elbow this week, a procedure deals another blow to the organization’s battered relievers.
Zavada will miss the rest of the season. Elbow-ligament replacement procedures typically sideline pitchers for 12 months, more or less.
“I think he threw a pitch in Reno and felt it and the tingling associated with it,” General Manager Josh Byrnes said.
After Zavada struggled with command and control issues in spring training, the club had hopes that he would be able to go to Reno and rediscover the form that allowed him to be an effective major league reliever last ...

D-Backs sign Ayala to minor league deal

Category: Nick P's blog — Nick Piecoro - NickPiecoro's Blog - azcentral.com @ 11:32 am
The Diamondbacks, looking for bullpen help wherever they can find it, added another pitcher to their minor league depth on Thursday, signing right-hander Luis Ayala to a minor league deal.
Ayala, 32, was once a reliable reliever in the National League, but he has struggled the past two seasons at the big league level.
Pitching for the Expos/Nationals from 2003-2007, Ayala posted a 2.82 ERA and averaged 64 appearances. His past two seasons have not been as successful. He had a 5.71 ERA in 81 appearances in 2008 and a 5.63 ERA in 38 games in 2009.
This season, he was in Triple-A ...

Boyer designated for assignment

Category: Nick P's blog — Nick Piecoro - NickPiecoro's Blog - azcentral.com @ 10:15 am
Right-hander Blaine Boyer became the latest casualty among the Diamondbacks’ battered relief corps when he was designated for assignment this morning.
The move clears a roster spot for right-hander Billy Buckner, who will start today’s game against the Marlins.
Boyer struggled to throw strikes, walking 11 in 12 2/3 innings with a 7.82 ERA.
“He struggled with his command quite a bit,” manager A.J. Hinch said. "It’s hard coming out of the bullpen if your command is off. You fall behind, you walk hitters and it’s a tough predicament to put yourself in. He started to tinker with his delivery and really tried ...

Rain delay; Reynolds scratched; Mateo signed & other stuff

Category: Nick P's blog — Nick Piecoro - NickPiecoro's Blog - azcentral.com @ 5:07 pm
The start of tonight’s game has been delayed by rain here in Miami. Shocking, I know. It never rains here in Miami. Except for all the time.
They haven’t announced a new start time. The rain was coming down pretty good a little while ago, but it’s stopped for the moment. The tarp is still on the field. Forecasts say there’s about an 80 percent chance of rain until about 8:45 p.m. Florida time, so we’ll see if they decide to wait that out.
Update: They've announced a 7:40 p.m. start time. That's 4:40 p.m. Arizona time.

Another bullpen shakeup: D-Backs acquire Rivera, release Howry

Category: Nick P's blog — Nick Piecoro - NickPiecoro's Blog - azcentral.com @ 11:21 am
The Diamondbacks announced they have acquired right-handed reliever Saul Rivera from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for cash considerations. In a corresponding move, right-hander Bob Howry was placed on unconditional release waivers.
Rivera, 32, had a 0.53 ERA in 17 innings for Triple-A Columbus, holding opponents to a .155 average.
He has spent parts of four seasons in the big leagues, all with the Washington Nationals, posting a 4.05 ERA in 275 2/3 innings. He was ineffective last season, with a 6.10 ERA in 38 1/3 innings, but had a 3.72 ERA combined in his first three major league seasons.
Rivera will join ...
